Watching Bush nominate Judge Samuel A. Alito Jr. this morning:
"Judge Alito ... has more prior judicial experience than any Supreme Court nominee in more than 70 years."
Learned a lesson there, did he?
BTW- Alito's a Jersey native- from Trenton, no less. Not that that should sway opinion of him, I'm just sayin'.

Everyone balked at Miers - who was questionable but possibly moderate. And now we get "Scalito".
Maybe this was Bush's strategy all along. Throw out a moderate, take 'em away and then throw out what he really wanted. Now he'll be able to say "well, you didn't want my first choice...."
Ugh.

In all honesty,, I'd rather have a qualified conservative on the bench than an unqualified moderate. (I don't know whether Alito fits that bill or not; I only heard his name for the first time today.) Even if the court becomes hideously right-wing (which it almost certainly will until a Democrat can make some appointments), it's better than it becoming just another chance to thank a presdent's political cronies.
I have to agree with Rob S. I'd rather have Alito, who has the experience and dedication, than what's-her-name who was simply a Teflon Dubya crony.
Lucky for me, because that's what's going to happen. I don't expect that Alito won't pass the senate muster. He may get confirmed mostly on party lines, but he'll get confimred.
