New Quinnipiac Poll

A new Quinnipiac poll of voters in Our Fair State was released this morning. (I love it that they include a pronunciation guide in each of their polls (it's KWIN-uh-pe-ack), but I digress.) In general: Senator Menendez and Kean Junior are very close in the senate race with Menendez holding a slight edge, a vast majority of us dislike how the president is handling Iraq and his job in general, we don't think Senator Clinton can beat Rudy Guliani, and there are far too few Feingold supporters here.

Here's the money quote:

Among Kean voters, 32 percent point mainly to philosophical agreement, with 26 percent who like him because they liked his father, former Gov. Thomas Kean, and 18 percent who point to his record in the State Senate.
...
"It is significant that a quarter of Sen. Kean's supporters are voting for the son because they like the father. That could be a weakness for Kean as he becomes better known on his own by the voters," Richards added.

Sorry, Junior; sometimes, familiarity breeds contempt.

Couldn't Menendez face the same challenges when voters are educated about his dealings with Kay LiCausi?

I hope so, but I doubt it. The bar has been raised pretty high in this state for outrage. Unless something new comes out he's likely to skate on that.

They all face those challenges. Menendez isn't all that well known state-wide, but he does have the distinct advantage of being Senator Robert Menendez now. Polling this early only gives us a hint at on what the candidates need to focus, not any real prediction of how the election will go. And this poll shows that Kean's confusion with his father gives him points- but may fail when we find out who he really is.

New Jersey doesn't yet know how Junior would have voted on all the issues Menendez has had to vote on. Right now, Junior seems to think he can make that unnecessary, which is why he ducked a photo op with Cheney. But this election will be about national issues & the Cheney/Bush junta. This is not his father's Repugs. With luck, his own party will drive him so far to the right he'll never find the center again.
